Birmingham Women’s Hospital has been providing a high standard of care to couples and individuals experiencing fertility problems since 1980. The Assisted Conception Unit (ACU) is the only unit of its type in Birmingham that is based in an NHS hospital. The unit is licensed by the Human Fertilisation Embryology Authority. Due to our hospital-based location, we are able to provide a full range of fertility, gynaecology and obstetrics services from diagnosis of infertility right through to the delivery of your baby, on one site. |

Expertise Our clinical, scientific and nursing teams are led by recognised experts in fertility. We have the expertise and facilities to offer you the full range of tests and investigations that you might need, as well as any necessary treatment. Innovation Our embryology laboratory, completed in 2006 is one of the few in Europe, and the only one in Central England, to run as a “clean room” which means that the environment is optimised for the culture of eggs and embryos. This contributes to our goal of delivering the highest standard of care, as we have seen a steady rise in pregnancy rates since moving into these new facilities. Advanced Diagnostics An accurate and rapid diagnosis is essential to you receiving the best and most appropriate treatment. We are members of many UK and international quality accreditation systems and studies, giving you assurance in having a diagnosis with us. In addition to our standard semen analysis the ACU can offer in house sperm DNA damage and chromosome testing. Through our hospital location we have access to specialists in tubal diagnosis and surgery. Comfort The ACU has recently undergone a complete refurbishment to improve our patient environment and facilities. It is important that our patients feel relaxed and comfortable, because we understand that you may be feeling anxious as you prepare for your fertility diagnosis and / or treatment. Patient Care We understand how important, sensitive and confidential this treatment is for you. During your treatment, it is likely you will experience a whole range of emotions. Our experienced team will be on hand throughout your treatment to give you help, information and support. Location Located just outside the city centre, with the A38 (from M5, M6 or M40) and University railway station serving us, and ample parking on-site we are easily and rapidly accessible from all over the region. |

Welcome to the Assisted Conception Unit, part of the integrated fertility services offered by Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust. We aim to support you, offering guidance and counselling through every step of your care, as we understand only too well the intense emotions associated with fertility treatment. We are proud not only of our medical and scientific skills and the expertise of our staff, but also of the friendly atmosphere you will experience. We now offer the most advanced laboratory facilities in the Midlands, and this is reflected in our current results. We are also one of only two Assisted Conception Units in the country, based in a dedicated Women’s hospital, giving you continuity of care from diagnosis to delivery. By tailoring your treatment specifically to your clinical needs we aim to give you the best chance of success. Supported by an active research programme, we are constantly looking at ways of improving diagnosis and treatment, and we have particular expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility. You can help us to improve our service by giving us feedback about your experience. Let us know what you liked, and where we could improve the service. Help us to do our best for you. |

The Centre for Human Reproductive Science (ChRS) integrates infertility expertise from its research collaborations worldwide with the Fertility Services and Assisted Conception Unit at the Women’s Hospital to deliver the latest in treatment and diagnosis to patients. We continue to advance the understanding of all scientific and social issues related to Fertility. The research alongside the University of Birmingham, is multi-disciplinary with many active national as well as international collaborations.
One current development is the preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) service about to be launched jointly with the West Midlands Regional Genetic Service (also located within Birmingham Women’s Hospital). This will enable screening of embryos for serious genetic diseases before they are placed back in the womb.
