During a health consultation individuals may be given advice regarding lifestyle issues which may influence the development of cancer and other illnesses. Recommendations may include the following:
Healthy eating
Recommendations include eating:
- A variety of foods
- Plenty of fruit and vegetables (e.g. 5 portions /day)
- Plenty of foods rich in starch and fibre, such as bread, breakfast cereals, potatoes, pasta, rice etc.
- A low fat intake
- A low sugar intake
Drink alcohol sensibly
A unit of alcohol = 1/2 pint of ordinary strength beer, lager or cider or a small glass of wine, spirits or sherry.
2-3 units/day is the recommended maximum for women
3-4 units/day is the recommended maximum for men
Weight
Patients should be encouraged to maintain a healthy body weight by combining a healthy diet with regular exercise.
Giving up smoking
Patients should be made aware of the risks involved with smoking. The NHS Smoking Helpline can be contacted on 0800 169 0169 (www.givingupsmoking.co.uk).
Exercise
Regular exercise (e.g. walking) is suggested for 20 minutes 3 times per week.
Stress
Patients should be encouraged to find ways to relax and unwind.
