ONCOLOGY SECTION

The cytogenetic oncology section is divided into four disease specific teams:

i. Leukaemia's / Pre-leukaemia's
ii. Stem Cell Transplantation
iii. Solid Tumours
iv. Lymphoproliferative Diseases

The section processed around 7000 haematological blood, marrow and paediatric solid tumour samples in 2008. Around 50% of these are diagnostic cases, with the remainder being referred for a wide range of follow up studies. A combination of G-banded karyotyping, Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridisation (FISH) and molecular genetic testing techniques are employed. The results obtained assist in the diagnosis and classification of leukaemias, solid tumours, and related disorders, provide prognostic information for use in risk stratification, and enable assessment of disease status post treatment/transplantation.
