About Our Services

We provide a comprehensive range of in-patient and out-patient services for women and babies and maintain strong nursing and medical links with the University of Birmingham Medical School and the University of Central England.

Main Services:

Gynaecology

Our Gynaecology services include:

  • Treating menstrual disorders at our Hysteroscopy Clinic
  • Treating women with prolapse and continence problems at our Urogynaecology Clinic
  • Treating women with hormone and menopause problems at our Menopause Clinic.
  • Treating gynaecological cancers and pre-invasive disease of the genital tract.

Birmingham Women’s Hospital has long enjoyed a reputation as a leading centre in research, particularly in respect to gynaecological cancers.

Colposcopy:
This unit is renowned nationally and internationally as a friendly yet professional service to women with abnormal smears. The unit conducts research into pre-invasive disease of the cervix.

Cytology:
The Cytology department is the longest established cervical cytology department in the country and it’s successful beginnings in 1955 helped to bring about the NHS screening programme set up in 1988.

Physiotherapy:
We have a dedicated team of highly qualified physiotherapists specialising in women’s health. The staff help to prepare women physically and mentally for major surgery and provide after care to speed up recovery.

Maternity

Maternity services provide medical and midwifery care for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the period during which they recover from childbirth. We also deal with high risk pregnancy problems which may arise from conception to delivery.

Community:
We have a team of community midwives who will be looking after you throughout your pregnancy. They provide care in your home, ante natal clinics and in the hospital.

Delivery Suite:
Within the hospital, the midwives work in the delivery suite and the post natal wards.

Birth Centre: (click for further details)
The Trust has recently opened a purpose-built Birth Centre designed   specifically with home comforts and to provide relaxation during labour. This midwifery-led centre caters for women who have had a normal pregnancy and who do not want to give birth in the high tech environment of the normal delivery suite.

Day Assessment Unit:
Care is provided for those who require extra monitoring during their pregnancy.

A Pre-Pregnancy/Pregnancy Loss Clinic:
This service provides counselling and support for women who have suffered recurrent miscarriages, fetal  anomaly, stillbirths and neonatal deaths. We also provide help in planning the care of future pregnancies.

Fetal Medicine

This service is a referral centre for the West Midlands. We provide a comprehensive service in conjunction with the Cytogenetic laboratories. Some of our services include detailed scans,  fetal echocardiography, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, fetal blood sampling and transfusions and intrauterine fetal therapy.

Our Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU):

This service provides a speedy assessment and diagnosis for newly-expectant mothers. Our aim is to see patients on the day of referral and provide same-day ultrasound scans.

Radiology:

The Radiology service provides obstetric ultrasound imaging support

Fertility


Assisted Conception Unit (ACU):
This unit has been providing services for infertile couples for 24 years There is a broad range of services, including in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and donor insemination.

Neonatal

Neonatal Unit:
This regional referral centre for small or sick babies has intensive care cots with life-saving equipment and transitional care for small, but well babies where their mothers can care for them together with our nurses and midwives.

Genetics

West Midlands Clinical Genetics Service
Clinical genetics is a medical speciality which is concerned with the cause, course, diagnosis and treatment of genetic and part-genetic disorders. The Clinical Genetics Service offers a family based service throughout the West Midlands Region.

West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory
The West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory is the largest in the United Kingdom. It handles over 40,000 samples annually.

West Midlands Family Cancer Strategy (WMFACS)
The West Midlands Family Cancer Strategy is a service in the West Midlands for the identification and management of individuals at risk of developing cancer because of their family history.

Centre for Education in Medical Genetics
Our Centre for Education in Medical Genetics (CEMG) brings together our expertise in identifying educational needs, developing educational resources and training opportunities and delivering high quality genetics education.
