Birth Centre Facts and Figures
The birth centre is available for you, if you have not been identified to have any problems in your medical history, previous birth history or during this pregnancy. The reason for us carefully selecting women is to ensure optimal safety for both you and your baby. Please ask your midwife to check if you could be suitable
Question: How many women have their babies on the birth centre? 1184 women gave birth to their baby on the birth centre during April 09- March 10.
- Active birth - you have a 66% chance of giving birth in a position other than sitting on the bed. Being in a different position from sitting is more comfortable and gravity often helps with the birth.
- Water - 38% of our women use either the bath or pool during labour for pain relief and 15% choose to give birth in the water.
Question: Once I arrive in labour and am accepted onto the birth centre, what are my chances of having a normal birth?
Whether you give birth on the birth centre or transfer out because of a problem our recent figures suggest that :
| Mode of Birth | % |
| Normal | 82 |
| Ventouse (a suction cup) | 6 |
| Forceps | 6 |
| Emergency Caesarian Secction | 6 |
| Total | 100 |
We are really proud of these figures and we are also recognised nationally as one of the largest and most successful birth centres in the country.
