Welcome to the Maternity Services Liaison Committee (MSLC)

What is the MSLC?

MSLC LogoWe are a group of people involved in planning, providing and receiving maternity care, including customers of that care. We aim to advise on developments in local maternity services and monitor progress towards agreed standards so that all parents benefit from improvements in care.

What do we do?

  • We provide feedback to clinicians and hospital staff about parents’ experiences of Birmingham Women’s Hospital (BWH) maternity services
  • We identify areas in which we can work together to make improvements to information, care and people’s experience
  • We offer a customer-focus to putting in place medical guidelines
  • We question what, why and how BWH offers its services to women and their partners

The committee is chaired by a customer representative, Michelle Dalton. It provides an opportunity for parents to have their say about services.

Who can become a member?

Membership is open to parents who have had a baby in the South Birmingham PCT area, whether in the delivery suite, in the birth centre or at home.  You are very welcome to join our committee as a customer representative.

This means someone who puts forward the views of service users. You may be a local woman of child-bearing age, a pregnant woman or her partner, parents of a baby, or a woman who has had a baby and may have subsequent children.

Membership of the MSLC also includes midwives, consultants, senior staff from BWH and the PCT.

Getting involved:

Sometimes it can be hard to get to meetings in the daytime because of work or childcare. The customer representative group also meets in the evening every other month. If you want to be involved, perhaps you would like to join us for an evening meeting?

We are keen to receive feedback from women who have had their babies in the care of BWH.Your views will help to shape services and develop policies and guidelines so that we can improve care provision and meet the needs of women within the local community.

Some of the topics discussed at recent meetings have included:

  • pathways for feedback – following through action and reporting results
  • information and ease of attending scans for pregnant women
  • a focus on the welcome and helpfulness of all staff when parents arrive at hospital, to their scan or on a ward
  • making information about having your baby at BWH easier to find
  • improving the birth environment in delivery suite rooms to encourage active birthing
  • checking up that outstanding issues are being followed-up

A quick and easy way to ensure your views are being represented without attending meetings is to download and complete this simple questionnaire about your experience, contact details below to return it to.
