Clinical Chemistry
Clinical Chemistry is the study of chemical and biochemical mechanisms of the body in relation to disease. The Clinical Chemistry department provides the link between medicine and the basic sciences employing analytical and interpretative skills to aid the clinician in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
The hospital is the regional referral centre for obstetric, gynaecology oncology and neonatal cases.
The Department of Clinical Chemistry has delivered a number of service developments such as estimation of human chorionic gonadotrophin in the management of early pregnancy and antenatal screening service. The Department carries out testing of routine biochemical analytes such as glucose as well as currently being the largest antenatal screening laboratory in the country, screening for neural tube defects, Down’s Syndrome and other abnormalities in pregnancy.
Quality of service is continually maintained by effective internal quality control measures, participation in Clinical Pathology accreditation, numerous External Quality Assurance schemes, National Institute of Clinical Excellence and National Screening Committee guidelines.
