How can patients help?

We believe that everyone can play a vital role in helping to prevent and control infections in our Trust, staff, patients and visitors too.

Please help us to maintain our high standards by:

Keeping your bed space tidy

Try to bring only essential items into hospital, to avoid the bed space becoming cluttered and difficult to clean

Letting us know if you have any concerns or questions

If you have any concerns about cleanliness or infection control issues during your stay please speak to the nurse/manager in charge of the shift

Avoid sharing toiletries

Please bring you own toiletries with you to hospital and only use your own. Please do not share your toiletries with other patients or leave them in communal areas

Hand Hygiene

Hand washing is one of the most simple and effective ways of preventing the spread of infection.

Remember to clean your hands frequently throughout the day

Please ask if you need help to wash your hands after using the toilet/commode or before meals

Encourage your visitors to clean their hands on entering and leaving the ward or department

More information regarding hand hygiene can be found here

Avoid touching your wound, drip site or drainage tubes.

Even if you have washed your hands. If you are concerned and think there may be signs of infection, please speak to the nurse or doctor looking after you.
