Who will look after me during my pregnancy?
Your care is usually provided by midwives. Sometimes midwives and doctors work together to give care. Whether you receive midwifery care only or are booked with a consultant, you can be confident we have the expertise to look after and support you fully throughout your pregnancy. As well as manage any problem which may arise from conception to birth.
Antenatal care is provided in many different ways for women booked at the hospital. You might be seen here on one occasion or you might need to attend regularly. Further information about our antenatal clinics can be found in this section.
Other services
We have other departments and services which may become involved in your care, depending upon your need and individual circumstances:
Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) provides speedy assessment and diagnosis of newly-expectant mothers. A part of the Gynaecological Emergency Assessment Unit, the aim is to see patients on the day of referral and, in many cases, provide same-day diagnosis. A radiographer can provide same-day ultrasound scans and a more rapid diagnosis, and there's also a Saturday service. You will need to be referred by your GP to the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit.
Pre-Pregnancy/Pregnancy Loss Clinic
This Clinic provides counselling and support for women who have suffered recurrent miscarriages, stillbirth, neonatal death and fetal anomaly and to those with known maternal diseases. We also investigate the causes of pregnancy loss and plan for the care of subsequent pregnancies.
Fetal Medicine
The Fetal Medicine Centre provides a comprehensive, specialist service for complex pregnancies and takes referrals from all over the West Midlands. Some of the work carried out by the Fetal Medicine Centre include detailed scans; fetal echocardiography; amniocentesis; chorionic villus sampling; fetal blood sampling and transfusions and intrauterine fetal therapy.
Day Assessment Unit
The Day Assessment Unit enables women to come in and have additional care and monitoring of themselves and/or babies
