Our Facilities on Delivery Suite

We have the following rooms available in which we proved care and include:

  • 11 delivery or birth rooms
  • 1 of the birth rooms has a birth pool
  • 4 shower/toilets
  • 2 high dependency rooms for women who need to have close monitoring of their care
  • 2 theatres
  • 4 beds in our recovery area
  • Abbey Suite with 2 bereavement rooms

Birth/delivery rooms

Most of our rooms have an easy chair, beanbags, mats and birth balls. Please ask if there is something missing that could assist you and we will do our best. All of the beds can be raised or lowered easily. We know that being on the bed does not help labour to progress as well as being upright. You will find that leaning over the bed and changing position regularly will help baby to get into a good position for the birth as well as to help you to cope with contractions.

Usually women who are with us on delivery suite require continuous monitoring of their baby’s fetal heart rate. Although your movement can be reduced somewhat with the monitor, you can still be upright. Ask us to assist you to get into a good position which is comfortable for you.

The Pool

We have a new birth pool and we know that labouring in water helps women to relax more which helps them cope with the pain of labour. However, if you are with us on delivery suite, we will need to consider your request to use water in terms of safety. Ideally, ask during your pregnancy so we can plan your care in advance of your labour starting.

Theatre

We have 2 theatres on delivery suite. We use the theatres mainly for Caesarean sections both elective and emergency. Sometimes, we transfer women to theatre for an instrumental birth if we think that there is a possibility that you might need a Caesarean section.

Some women tear following the birth and need to be stitched in theatre. The advantage of this being that there is the option for good pain relief as well as good lighting.
