Disability support

The Library & Information Service is for ALL BWH staff, students on placement and visitors (including patients and carers) and we aim (where possible) to offer an equitable  service to meet any individual’s specific requirements as part of the Disability Equality Duty, the Equality Act 2010. and the Trust's single equality scheme (only available to staff on the Intranet

If you need any help using the library or any of it’s services and resources then please contact library staff on X8746, direct dial 0121 627 5846, email: library@bwhct.nhs.uk and library staff will be happy to assist you in any way they can.

The library is located on the lower ground floor of the hospital in the Education Resource Centre (ERC) and you will need your trust ID card to gain access to the ERC. During normal office hours if you do not have a trust ID card please press the buzzer and ask for the library and ERC staff will let you in.

Physical accessibility

  • From the hospital main entrance, follow the signs to the stairs or lifts and go down to the lower ground floor and follow the signs to the library.
  • There is also direct access to the ERC via the side entrance from the lower ground car park.
  • Please note that doors are heavy if you will need assistance with opening doors then please phone us (or ask main reception to phone us) and we will come and assist.
  • The library has wide aisles to accommodate wheelchairs.
  • We have 3 types of chairs in the library, so please choose the most appropriate chair and adjust it to your requirements. If you need a chair moving to a specific place in the library and/or need help adjusting the chair please ask a member of library staff.
  • There is a ‘KIK-step’ located by the library door for people to use to be able to access higher shelves themselves or ask a member of library staff for assistance.
  • Some of the journal shelving is located above computers please ask a member of library staff to assist with accessing these journals.
  • There is a disabled toilet in the ERC.

General assistance

  • Library staff will assist in fetching stock from shelves upon request.
  • Library staff will issue items to you and bring them to your office/department upon request.
  • Loans can be extended for longer periods upon request.
  • Library staff will assist with using the catalogue and other electronic resources upon request.
  • Renewals can be done remotely either online, via email, or telephone.
  • Library staff will assist with photocopying.
  • Please let library staff know if you need items copied onto a specific colour of paper.
  • Please let library staff know if you need items enlarged.
  • Please let library staff know if you require journal articles including those supplied via our article request service to be photocopied or printed onto a specific coloured paper and/or enlarged.

We assume that members of BWH staff will have the relevant assistive/adaptive resources/technology for their specific requirements in their own office/department to allow them to carry out their job.
