Library Service Summary

Access

  • BWH staff and students, on placement at BWH, have 24/7 access via their BWH ID card.
  • The library is staffed between 09.00 - 17.00, Monday - Friday.
  • Patients and carers should use the Patient Advice and Information Centre but may have reference access to the library during staffed times.


BASE membership

  • See the BASE Library website for membership criteria and your local BASE Library.
  • Staff (NHS and Social Services) should initially register via their organisation's BASE Library.
  • Staff should update their BASE Library card details when starting employment at a new BASE Library.
  • Students should initially register on their first placement at a BASE Library.
  • Students should update their BASE Library card details when starting a new placement at a new BASE Library organisation.
  • Students are entitled to BASE Library services for the duration of their placement at a BASE Library. The library here at BWH allows reference access between BASE placements.


Summary of services

  • Books, e-books, journals and e-journals.
  • Photocopier, black & white printer (colour printing via library staff), scanner, A3 laminator, steel spine binder (charges may apply to these services).
  • All library members can borrow books and use PCs equipped with MS Office, Internet etc.
  • Up to six books can be borrowed for 1 month (or 1 week for high demand books).
  • Students on placement can borrow up to four books for 2 weeks (or 1 week for high demand books).
  • BWH staff members also have access to:
    • Inter Library Loan and Document Delivery Service (charges may apply)
    • Literature Search Service
    • Literature Search Training
    • Critical Appraisal Training


Our aims are to:

  • Promote and support a culture of evidence based practice and life long learning in the Trust.
  • Be friendly, polite and helpful
  • Acknowledge enquiries on day of reciept indicating follow-up action & time scale.
  • Complete literature searches to the time requested.
  • Process 90% of Inter Library Loan requests within 1 working day.
  • Supply urgent action article requests on time (typically within 2-3 hours).
  • Provide information skills training on request or book an appointment for a mutually convenient time.
