Searching for evidence – for beginners
A training session for people who have a limited amount of searching experience or want a reminder session.
Learning outcomes:
The session will cover identifying appropriate sources for searching, textbooks, healthcare databases, NHS evidence and Cochrane library.
Identifying keywords for searching, understanding the importance of currency and quality of evidence.
Carry out simple searches.
Understand the basic principles of thesauri and subject headings.
Selecting and retrieving abstracts and articles in full text.
Saving searches.
This training session is for trainees who are computer literate and familiar with using a keyboard and mouse and the internet. Session length is two hours.
Completing this training achieves levels 2 and 3 of KSF dimension IK2 (information collection and analysis).
How to use electronic journals:
A training session for anyone unfamiliar with our electronic journals provision.
This session will cover, understanding what Athens authentication and setting up an Athens account.
Accessing the “My journals” website.
Dealing with routine e-journals access and authentication problems.
Have a basic understanding of copyright issues regarding e-journals.
Knowing who to contact when having problems or when links are not working.
Placing requests for journal articles that are not available from my journals.
This session is for trainees who are familiar with using a keyboard and mouse, and the internet, session is an hour long.
